Notes 2001: © Tom Jones for the Savage Club, London It seems some time ago that a few Savages agreed that we should capture some of our musical evenings on CD. It offers an opportunity to pass on a valuable legacy to future Savages, as well as enabling current Savages to reminisce about some of our shared times. This is the first.
In 1999, the centenary of Ellington's birth, Stan Tracey and Andrew Cleyndert were in great demand to commemorate the great jazz composer. Their musical style in those concerts seemed to resonate with the Savage Club style. They were booked for 24th January 2001 and recorded live with an audience of Brother Savages and guests.
If you were there, you can enjoy it again. If you weren't, you can hear what you missed. Never before has our Steinway experienced such a savajazz phenomenon. Oh Brother Savajazz - it loved it.
Stan Tracey - OBE - for services to British Jazz, pianist, composer, arranger.
Inspired by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, Stan Tracey is an outstanding exponent of both. He was resident pianist at Ronnie Scott's Club for seven years and cut the "Alfie" film soundtrack with Sonny Rollins. His original, instantly recognisable style has made him one of the few world class British jazz musicians. Recent recordings include Solo:Trio and For Heaven's Sake, on the Cadillac label and Comme D'Habitude on the Jazzizit label. His compositions include the jazz suites Under Milk Wood and Alice in Jazz Land.
Andrew Cleyndert - Double Bass
Recognised as a top class bass player Andrew Cleyndert has worked with almost every outstanding British jazz musician over the last twenty years, cutting across all jazz styles and across all generations. Most notably, he has worked with two godfathers of British jazz, Ronnie Scott and Stan Tracey. World famous names have applauded him, including USA pianists Benny Green and Gene Harris. Andrew features on Stan Tracey's recent recordings, and on Stacy Kent: Close your eyes on Candid Records.
